The supercross series hit Angel Stadium in Anaheim for the third time on Saturday. The season is shaping up to be insane and there is no clear sign of who will end up with the championship. In the lites class, Dean WIlson took his first win of the season. In the big bikes, Chad Reed led pretty much the whole race and ended up with the win. Rookie Ken Roczen was right on his tail but couldn’t make the pass and ended up finishing 2nd. Ryan Villopoto ended up in 3rd. The next race is in San Diego, CA this Saturday. X-Games just took over Aspen all weekend and all eyes were on the athletes because this was the final event before the Olympics. It gave everyone one last chance to get their runs dialed under the pressure of competition. It also marked the first time Louie Vito would pull double duty not only riding, but hosting the X-Games as well. Louie had to bounce back and forth between the pipe and cameras all weekend and he killed it at both. In the half pipe finals, Danny Davis took his first ever X-Games win. Louie Vito and Greg Bretz were very close behind in 2nd and 3rd.
In slopestyle, Mark McMorris took home a silver medal but unfortunately took one of the hardest crashes we have ever seen and broke a rib. He will be on a serious resting program until he has to ride in the Olympics in just over a week.
Congrats to everyone who killed it this weekend in Aspen. Follow us on Twitter for a schedule of when to tune in to the Olympics!
It was a historical weekend at Mammoth with the first ever US Slopestyle team being named, along with the pipe team. Because of bad weather earlier in the season, the athletes were forced to run three finals in two days. The Mammoth Unbound staff did an insane job getting the slopestyle course and half pipe ready for the event, despite low snow levels. There are five Grand Prix qualifyers and the athletes’ top two scores are counted from all the events.
Heading into the first day of competition for half pipe, Taylor Gold and Greg Bretz were almost certainly guaranteed a spot on the four man team as a result of their victories earlier this year. In final #1, Danny Davis came out and earned a HUGE win and our boy Matt Ladley took 3rd. Both these guys put themselves in a good position with these results. Final #2 of the day will go down in history as one of the best halfpipe finals of all time. Shaun White rode this one and locked in a first place score after sticking the first ever double cork 1440. Scotty Lago stepped up and earned himself a 2nd place finish throwing his name in the mix now as well. By the time Sunday’s final contest kicked off, Greg Bretz, Taylor Gold, and Shaun White had secured their spots on the team. There was one spot left for Louie Vito, Matt Ladley, Scotty Lago, Danny Davis, and Ben Furguson to battle for. The guys knew they could hold nothing back and unfortunately Scotty and Ladley went down pretty hard after their first runs. Scotty was able to continue riding but Matt had to go to the hospital to get checked out. At the end of the day, Danny Davis finished 2nd and earned himself the final spot on the team.
On the slopestyle side there was a little drama with the choosing of the team. There were originally supposed to be four spots on the team. Sage Kotsenburg finished 2nd in both of Thursday’s slope style finals, which meant he would have had his spot on the team locked no problem. However, for some reason things got changed last minute and they only decided to take three spots, which meant Sage needed a win in the final event on Saturday. The kicker is that Sage hasn’t won a contest since he was eleven. Rising to the occasion, Sage did what everyone hoped he would and won the final Grand Prix final earning him a spot on the team. It was the perfect ending for Sage.
Sage and Greg will join Mark McMorris in Sochi to hold it down for Ethika. We send out well wishes to Matt Ladley for a SPeedy recovery!
